Paul was a 1926 graduate of RFHS where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He was an All-Conference selection in football during both his Junior and Senior years as an end. Paul was named to the All-State football team.

After leaving Rock Falls, Paul attended the University of Illinois where he earned his degree and went on to teach and coach for 35 years.
